yep. they say a GB is 1000 MB but it is really 1024 MB so if you do the math... it is about 465 i believe so spot on

so 500*1000*1000*1000=500000000000
500000000000/1024/1024/1024=465

No, what brianmay said was correct. Your computer measures gb as 1024mb, mb as 1024 kb, etc. but the labels measure gb as 1000mb, mb as 1000kb, etc.

Hey, that's how I'd display/calculate it :p

Anyway, read the fine print :-/

One gigabyte, or GB, equals one billion bytes when referring to hard drive capacity. Accessible capacity may vary depending on operating environment and formatting.

In other words, a bunch of BS to sell you less for more.

Well. back in the days I remember getting hard drives and opening the box and there would be a paper saying that this drive was actually bigger than was stated. And I believe they were all Western Digital drives. Usually got like 3-4 more gigabytes then was stated.

true and the % gone ends up to be about 7% of your drive.

This gentle man here is correct. Hard drive maker and windows system use different way to calculate the hard drives. You'll always get a 500 GB hard drive shown as 465GB. So it's normal. Take it easy. :)
