If you had a 1500$ budget

I am sending a computer back to the manufacture because I have had too many problems with it. I need a new computer and I am still not sure if I am ready to "build" one of my own. I am thinking of going with Dell/Alienware as I have never had a problem with either before. I know that they are proud of there machines and are way overpriced.

So my question is If you have $1500, I would like to see what build you would go with. I do play Online games and use it for movies and school work. I know a little anatomy but when it comes to wireing that will be the hard part.

Thanks for the time and any responces you may have.

I am in the U.S. if that matters

Do you need a monitor, keyboard + mouse and speakers???

Or just the box???

Just the box, I just purchased a 22" lg monitor, already have the speakers, keyboard and mouse.

I know the bugs need to be ironed out of Vista but I would like it as my operating system.

lol there are no bugs with vista any more. unless your deep into programming or screwing with the operating system the common consensus is that it is solid and complete.

I like this so far but I have a couple questions, should I get 8gig of ram knowing that vista will support it?

For future planing and when the prices come down, will this MOBO support 2 of those GFX cards? And would I need a Bigger power supply to support it?

I am sure that there are a couple pieces and parts I can swipe out of my old Alienware that are still good, like dvd burners and hard drives to cut some costs. Anyway thanks for answering all of my questions.

Dont get 8GB of RAM, it's a waste right now.

That motherboard wont support 2 cards. For that you need either an X38 or X48 board which start at about $180 for the DFI one.

this is just off the top of my head

q6600 cpu
zalman 9700 cpu cooler
ati hd3870 graphics card
x48 motherboard
corsair dominator 2 x 2gb ram
corsair 750 watt psu
thermaltake armor+ case
seagate barracuda 400gb
any lite-on, asus, lg, or sony dvd drive

im not sure of the exact price but thats sure to be under $1500

Go for this motherboard if you are going to get 2 GFX cards.

8GB is not worth it.

You won't need a bigger power supply.

Better to get the whole thing i recommend, because the hard drive it is better. the DVD burner is a lightscribe and is better :P

If that is the case I already have 4 1gb sticks in my old computer that I can use.

Is the performance gain even worth a second graphics card, or will there always be the newer and better single card upgrade out there that that peticular MOBO will support?

What is the speed on the 4x1GB sticks? because you wouldnt really want anything below 800MHz.

There will always be bigger, better, faster GPU's coming out. Just like the 4870X2 should be out soon to rule the world of GPU's :P (for a few months anyway until a new card comes out :P)

2 4850's or 4870's would be great and will last you about 2-3 years (playing the mid-high level games)

With ATI cards, the extra card will be a huge boost. SLI only helps with higher resolutions, with the exception of the 8800gt.

off of Novatech (uk site)

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450
2GB memory
1TB hard drive
DVD writer
NVIDIA 9800GT 512Mb graphics
Thermaltake full tower ATX case

£700 which is like $1500

That mother board sucks for overclocking, I'll warn you now. Other than that I'd say Cohens build is the best.
