I seem to save photos and applications etc to my desktop, but worry this slows down the loading up of my computer. Is it better to save it elsewhere?

Some programs when installed will setup so that it runs at bootup and will slow things down a little. Pictures and documents will only slow it up if the drive is getting full.

It will slow down the initial display of the desktop since the icons & shortcuts for all the items you hvae on your desktop need to be loaded. Once loaded, they are cached the loading doesn't need to be done again.

Shot answer: no. Longer answer: if your computer can run Windows10/11, desktop icons are not a problem, except for the the initial display of the desktop mentioned above. If the icons are loaded from an SSD that shouldn't be a problem either. Even longer answer: TL,DR
