illegal software

Just started having the message from microsoft pop up everywhere on my screen
You may be a victim of pirated software

This copy on window cannot be validated.

How can I get rid of this? It is really annoying. My computer with windows XP Pro was purchased from a computer store which is now out of business but it works fine. I have looked for this message on my computer and in the hard drive C but cannot find it. I am not about to pay Microsoft for a valid copy after 4 years of use.
I think i made the mistake of allowing one of those "validate your copy of windows" from Microsoft when trying to update my player to version 11.

You likely need to call MS directly and choose a live rep not the automated voice in order to see Windows reactivated there being a preinstalled copy of XP. Apparently the new Genuine Advantage is not recognising it as being an activated copy of Windows seeing the automatic counterfeit copy of Windows alert. That's simply a new antipiracy tool inplace by Microsoft.

If you can not validate your computer over the internet, look for a phone number on the activation window so you can activate your copy of Windows via telephone. As long as the copy of Windows is legit, you won't have any issues.

If the system was bought new with a factory preinstall he should be all set simply getting a live rep over the phone and not simply their new totally automated voice. But that will provide instructions, have you read off the several groups of characters, plus give you a new set to type in for seeing it reactivated.

While that now makes things go faster it won't help if a problem comes up there and you need to talk to someone directly. It's simply a step taken by MS to see more people running legit copies being activated.

I Don't Care

At his point I realize the computer shop that built my computer and installed Xp Pro used an illegal copy of windows. I paid them for Xp not knowing what they did. Since they went out of business I have no recourse. I just want someone to tell me where these icons and messages from Microsoft are located on my computer so I can remove them. They are really annoying and keep coming on the screen. Every time I move to another new screen they flash on and cannot be removed. They also remove my installed wallpaper. Someone out there must know where they are located on the harddrive. I have no program disk for Xp pro and it is not built in.

The new problems are coming from Microsoft directly as part of their newer methods put inplace to fight software piracy! The best move for you is simply buying a full install OEM disk and seeing your own valid installation go on with all the benefits. An OEM disk(unbranded) will cost less then the retail version and see a fully legitimate install with a fresh clean start with the options for all MS and other updates.

When buying that new were you given any recovery disks or simply the system with Windows already on it? If you were given branded even non branded disks not simply burns then you would have something to work with.

Without genuine disks it's likely now you will have to buy a license through MS first in order to see that installation validated with a new number. But without any disks and if Windows gets trashed somehow you will be stuck without a working OS. The best move is still to grab an OEM disk and start over fresh and not go through the hassles in the long run.

When the first board quit after 3 days on the current build I caled in after the identical replacement came up with the "you may have a counterfeit copy of Windows" message displayed on the corner of the desktop. That was seen on Vista while XP had simply been reinstalled as soon as the new board was in.

For dgforeman a call in would be the idea at this point to see if it will be properly activated or reactivated. If you see results the next would be the installer 3.1 and Genuine Advange since everyone has to go through those first before they can get any updates.
