Hi there, Ive been trying to find a page that has the downloading laws per country and can not find them... when I was in europe .. I saw that a few countries had rules that you are allowed to download but not upload.. whats the rule in the states?

It is illegal in almost all countries except for a few, and even then it is highly subjective. The RIAA is the organization that fights such things over here in the USA and they are a dream team of lawyers. I suspect it is the same world wide.

I believe it's like that in Canada, at least that's what i know.

No it is Norway that does that, hence the whole court case against the pirate bay.

Canada has laws in place that do not allow violation of copyrighted materials.

Isn't the RIAA going after people in a different manner these days? I thought I read somewhere that instead of sending letters to individuals they've now teamed up with ISP's to have your internet access shut off if you're caught violating copyright laws.

Almost everywhere the law is that you can neither up nor download.

Uploading is the same as dealing pirated materials, downloading is the same as stealing. Just because it is 1s and 0s coming down doesn't mean it isn't stealing because it isn't a physical thing, an album or piece of software is just 1s and 0s on a disc, they are the same thing.

There are certain countries, like the ones that have been stated, but even so they don't like you doing it because it is theft

the letter i received addressed this from comcast. They said they will turn over information to this group as needed. Civil cases are expensive. it involved federal and will be deep in your pocket. its about putting the fear into people. Its true...........been there and done dat.

I believe TPB is based in Sweden, where there are no torrenting laws, but they are trying to buy their own island.

Piracy is now illegal in Sweden as of sometime last week (as far as I know!)

When the law came into place internet traffic in Sweden dropped by 30%!

Well at least they still have their watches and chocolate.....and maybe some hot swedish chicks.

OMG! so you guys are saying that you can download things but not upload anything.such as photo's, etc...? :O

No, because if you take photo's you own the copyright so you can do whatever you want with them. Same as movies you make, music you have created etc. Doug.

To add to the previous post... this is about pirated materials such as software, not free programs that you are legally allowed to download/upload.

u know in India, where I live, there are laws against piracy, but its implementation is very poor.
An astonishing fact is that, in India, almost more than 80% of the home users have pirated operating system installed.

Yes, but anything you post online with no copyright water mark is considered public domain and can be reused over and over again.
