But I was looking at a old piece of junk computer and I pulled the HSF off that lol and the chip was stuck to the heatsink and came off with it (despite being locked down on the mobo)

So obviously I dont want this to happen on my new rig... how do you aviod this?

That usually only happens if you use the stock type of heatsink that fits inside the stock CPU bracket. You cant twist or turn the heatsink because its wedged into the sockets bracket. The CPU almost becomes suctioned on the bottom of the heatsink.

You should not have a problem with yours since the base just sits on the CPU itself. Just run a game for a minute to warm it up before you start, makes it alittle easier. After you unhook the heatsink just twist it slightly before you pull up on it.
 
One video I watched had the dude put some thermal paste on the Heat Sink spread it around then wipe it off and then put a drop on the cpu and put the heat sink on...

Why did he do that? Is it a good idea?

No idea, usually i just put a small drop in the center and let the pressure from the heatsink spread it itself...
 
Lol ok... so I shouldnt bother with all the fancy spreading techniques n stuff.

Also one video said dont use alcohol when cleaning as it can fry ya board or something

Alcohol is the only thing TO use tbh unless you have arcticlean. As it evaporates quickly leaving no residue, higher concentrations work better(92%/97%) than the lower concentrations(70%) though, due to having less water.

Craziest thing I've heard, your cleaning a heatsink and processor shield. Why would you even have it on the board? Unless some joker piled the compound up and it shot out all over the CPU socket. But even then you can still use it to clean it up. I've even used it to clean off North/south bridges chipsets. Just use common sense and make sure its dry before you put it back together.
 
Im not planing on removing my CPU from the socket lol that might be why they said it lol.

Ok note to self... Go to hareware store get pure alcohol lol.
 
No big deal taking the CPU out. Just lift the lever and it comes right out, the corner of the processor is marked so you will know which direction to put it back in.

Most drug stores also sell alcohol in smaller bottles;) Although imo, its better to remove it from the socket, as alcohol dissolves the thermal compound, and being conductive prolly best to not get it on the board/socket..;)
 
Damn damn damn

Just realised that in order to take my V8 off... I have to remove the whole bloody motherboard from the case............ now Im angry.

One- Rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol
Two- Alcoholic beverages are Ethyl Alchol(Ethanol)
Three- Drinking isopropyl alcohol would kill you
