im getting pissed off, can sum1 help please

hi im just wondering can anyone help me. i bought a dvd burner (external) about a year ago, and it was working fine. then the other day i turned it on and i got a message UNKNOWN DEVICE. i thought it may be the drivers or something but i dont ever remember installing any in the first place. but i plugged an mp3 player into my pc today, and even after installing the drivers for this from a disc, it said the same thing. now im no wizard on the computer so it may be something simple (i hope). so any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance. :mad:
 
Try another port, XP has built in USB drivers, if they wont work after trying a fews things then you might be as well doing a repair install of XP, this means installing XP over your current version but not wiping existing data.
 
do you think it might be the usb drivers? my webcam still works. i did try using a different slot, but no joy.
 
If you want, try the windows install, bit make this a repair install, dont wipe your data, instal over the same install you currently have, post back for more info, this will take about 25-40 minutes dependign on your specs but i bet it fixes your problem.
 
i think i might be on the right track here. i plugged it into all my usb ports and on the last one it said found new hardware. but i dont remember this bit when i plugged it in before.......... the HI-SPEED USB hub is a HI-SPEED USB device and will function at reduced speed when plugged into a non HI-SPEED port. the hubs shown in bold type have free ports that can support the HI-SPEED USB device. (then it gives a reccomendation) disconnect the HI-SPEED USB hub from its current port and recconect it to one of the ports shown in bold type. now i suppose id do that? but i just had it in all of them?????
 
i thought it was working again, i swapped it with my webcam and used that port, it was then showing up as working. i even played a cd on it, then i turned it off last night. i thought all was fine, but when i switched it back on this morning it was, once again, an UNKNOWN DEVICE. what a *%$*%$*%. does anyone have any idaes??????
