I'm going overseas

I'll be going to The Netherlands (from Australia) in a couple of months and staying for a year. I want to take my pc (or at least the hard drives) But I'm not sure on how to do this...
Has anyone taken their pc with them overseas?
I was thinking of packing the hard drives with me (not sure about airport security though) And maybe sending the rest via courier. Or maybe take it apart and get someone to send it piece by piece through the mail.
Anyone know anymore info??

So how about transport of the rest of the gear, should I just tape it up in a big padded box or dismantle it or what?
I would be very careful about transporting computer parts, since things get thrown around and knocked over, it would have to be in a very padded container, and shouldnt be able to move inside.

What about the xrays etc. Will any of the equipment plus high and low temps affect the hardware during transit? Especially the second hdd...

all you need to do is lable it "Do Not X-Ray" Electronics. This is how you would get around it but make sure you ask your post master about it. They won't have a problem with that. As for the HDDs send it with the computer. Airport Athourtys will have to keep them. You might have to fill out a customs papers for it. But the best person to ask is you postmaster or mail carrier.

just sure you make them sign something stating that they are fully responsable for you computer crap

EDIT: i heard that X-Rays cant see through aluminum foil, so pad your case, then wrap in in aluminum foil?

First of all the postal service wount go for that. Second you can by insurence for it and will pay you for lost or damage parcels.

If you do that you will garentee to not get it.

Best thing to do is take the computer and a box to the post office have them look it over and make sure you take picures of it then box it up at the post office and then send it withthe customs form attached to it and get the insureince on it. It does cost a little more but it is worth it. It is what i had to do with my first computer when i moved from Germany to the US. If it damged in any way you have the photos to provide to claim the insurece on it. Make sure you have both the prints and negitves with you on the plane. and your insureice reciet. This will insure you will get you computer in one peice.

I still need to take a harddrive with me because ill need all my data.
I'm thinking maybe pack the case in a large box with lots of bubble wrap around it. Each piece of hardware would be wrapped in foam and then put in an anti-static bag, put in the case and the gaps would be stuffed with packing pellets.
Also the pictures idea is definately a good one!
