Ok guys, i need your help kinda quick-ish.

The mobo linked below is the new eVGA 680i... i love the board and want it in my new build. Thing is i can't jsutify paying £210 on just the board.

At this point in time, on an offer thats about to run out, its down to just £185 ish.... im in a dilemma, do i buy it quickly now in the sale and set it aside for when i build in february-ish time.... or do i wait unitl february when the price may have dropped to below £185 anyway...?

Opinions, suggestions? All wecome

I would wait, because I would think it would be lower by February, 2ish months is a rather long time for hardware staying the same price. :)

Well I have that mobo and i absolutely love it. The Gigabyte 965 is a great mobo, but you need to consider how future-proof it will be. The 680i has 3x PCI-E x16 slots, SLI, supports quad core and 1333FSB, and lots more. Thats the main reason I went with it.

Oh ya, and it's also great for overclocking.

Oh ya, just a note. Some people said that they had issues with SATA drives, but I never had a problem. eVGA also released a BIOS update on 12/21 which says that they fixed the SATA and RAID problems that a few people have.

That's what i was thinking, but then i thought that it is nVidia's latest chipset, and it wouldn't be getting old any time soon.... There's nothing else MAJOR in the pipeline (that i know of).....

Maybe ill just wait.... my bank balance hasn't recovered enough from xmas yet...

21st.... wel, if i bouyght now the boards in stock might still have the old BIOS on them, if i waited then i would be pretty much garunteed that the board i buy would have the updated BIOS on them...

And seeing as you have it already.... Any bad points? Little niggles that are jsut annoying? I'm mainly getting it for overlcokcing my e6600, im only planning on getting a single 7900GTO but about 5-6 months down the line when i have the cash i will be getting a second and SLI'ing them. I firgured this would be one of the best boards to do that with....

My board came with one of the earlier BIOS', but I never had any problems.

In my opinion, it's the best board there is, but there are a few slight cons about it. One being that the front panel headers are in a bad place (between the RAM slots and IDE port). I really cant think of anything else thats bad about it.

Good good, i was pretty set on getting that one, but just trying to see whether it had any major flaws, i wouldnt expect it to being fairly high end-ish

I think i will wait... though, i have about 2 months (Febrauary) to get just over £600.... can it be done? who knows.... Ive got about £500 sitting in my account, its a bit low due to christmas. I owe about £150 to people, thats £350 left, then i have to get to work and have lunch and stuff every weekend, and eat everyday at school, gah, why do things cost money, it sucks. Total cost for this rig is (at the moment) around £810

MSI 7900GTO (changed to two of them in SLi after a few months)

1Gb (2 x 512Mb Dual Channel) DDR2 800 - (The Corsair XMS2-6400 stuff)

Hiper 530w Type-R Modular PSU (12v1 @20A - 12v2 @17A) Im thinking of changing this to a better model, especially when i get SLi

Seagate 160Gb SATAII (small capacity, mainly because i don't use that much and it can be easily upgraded later)

And then obviously the core 2 duo e6600 and the evga 680i board

Thats about it, plus a few cables and fans and stuff, feel free to offer alternatives and suggestions. I'm open to pretty much anythign, but it does have to be intel, and it does have to be nVidia, lol, sorry.

*EDIT* - ok, i updated my quote on ebuyer, and everything EXCEPT the mobo comes to £667, that includes shipping and VAT, basically i dont want to stray too far away from the £800 mark as a grand total... So for the motherboard i wanna be spending about £140 minimum up to about £180 max, should be do-able by february methinks....

Since you said you're not going to buy this for a few months, are you sure you dont want to get a DX10 video card instead?

It would depend on whats released at around that time, i suppose it would make a lot more sense to future proof that much, but i dont really want to go much above what i would be paying at the moment.... Im not up to scratch with vid cards at the moment, so does/will having DX10 support increase the price just for the sake of DX10 (not performance) or is it still in proportion....

What im trying to say is, will i be paying over the odds just for it to have DX10 stamped on the side of it? Or does it provide a warranted performance boost for the SAME money

In Q1 of next year, nVidia will be releasing the lower end G80 models, such as the 8600, 8400, etc (so I hear). So it may be better if you waited a bit and then get an 8600 instead, since you would have DX10, but still a great performing card.

hmmm, very true, i mean, none of the parts are set in stone, they will probably change a lot between now and feb.... i started planning this about 2 months ago and its changed alot from then aswell....

cheers for your help geoff, lets see what early 2007 holds in store for us

You're very welcome. I also heard that the Core 2 Duo's will start being released with a 1333Mhz FSB soon as well, so perhaps you could buy one of those instead of the price isnt much greater.
