Hi, i'm new to these forums, and as a bit of an amateur i'm just wondering which of these pc's will be better for my needs (uni essays, facebook, football manager, itunes, spotify etc..):

Packard Bell Imedia X4520UK (£400)
-Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 processor (2.5ghz, 1333mhz fsb, 4mb cache)
-Windows 7 home premium 64-bit
-3gb DDR2 memory
-320gb harddrive
-Nvidia GeForce 7050 integrated graphics

Acer (?) (£400)
- AMD Athlon II x4 620 (2.6ghz, 2mb cache )
- Windows 7 home premium 64-bit
- 4gb DDR2 memory
- 640gb harddrive
- integrated graphics (NVIDIA® GeForce™ 6150 SE GPU 256MB i think)

sorry about the vagueness of the second computer details, but that's all i have i'm afraid.

Moreover, i would like to ask advice on just how much quicker/better these desktop computers are compared to these laptop computers:

Compaq Presario CQ61-340SA (£400)
-Intel Core Duo T6600 (2.2ghz, 2mb cache)
-Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)
-4gb DDR2 memory
-320gb harddrive
-integrated graphics

Advent Roma 3000 (£400)
- Intel Core Duo T4300 (2.1ghz, 800mhz, 1mb cache)
- Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)
- 4gb DDR2 memory
- 500gb harddrive
- integrated graphics

Packard Bell TJ65-AU 031 (£420)
- Intel Core Duo T4300 (2.1ghz, 800 mhz, 1mb cache)
- Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)
- 4gb DDR2 memory
- 320gb harddrive
- integrated graphics

sorry for the long post, and my ignorance, i'd just like some help as it's an expensive purchase and i don't want to get it wrong (i'm a student) thanks in advance :)

the first system you listed will beat both laptops put together. if you do need a laptop, the first one you listed is better.

This is hard decision, but I will just tell you cons and pros of the Intel build, and you decide by yourself which one to get

Cons
- Q8300 is slightly faster than x4 620
- GeForce 7050 is slightly better than 6150 SE (both are not very good for gaming though)

pros
- Intel build has 1GB less ram
- Intel build has smaller harddrive

Either one is very good for the things your are using, and I don't think you will notice any difference between the two

Out of those, the first laptop is the fastest

The biggest advantage that desktops have over these laptops is the CPU, the desktops have quad core while the laptops have dual core

Like I said, any of these machines are good for what your are using. You don't need very powerfull machine to run facebook, office applications or Itunes

thanks very much guys, so the first system it is then. Is there anyway i can upgrade the ram? and how much difference will an extra gig or two make for the cost?

For what your using the computer for, a RAM upgrade wouldn't really by that noticeable I don't think. I would just save the money
