2 how would i wipe my laptop 100% clean ? and then install the operating system?

When you install a new OS you boot from cd/dvd, then choose where to install the OS. thats when you can format your hard drives. so you format your hard drive, choose the one you want to install the os to, and start the installation.

Hi zach1234. Welcome to Computer Forum!

The Gateway Vista disk will not work for your Dell (as it is an OEM disk, not a retail Windows Vista disc). So looks like you'll be putting XP back on it.

Depending on your computer model, your system may have a recovery partition on it, so no disk would be necessary to restore your computer to factory conditions.

Many people still use XP - it's a good OS for no more than what most people need to do on their laptops. The only problem is that Microsoft will soon be "dropping" XP, meaning no more OS updates - so any new OS security vulnerabilities and errors that are discovered will not be patched, and therefore may be exploited or go unresolved, respectively. But as long as you're behind a router, this shouldn't be of significant concern.

If you were going to go for an updated OS, I would recommend Windows 7 over Vista.

It is possible that we could help you resolve your current problems so that no re-installation would be necessary.

If you would like to go that route, please post back with a detailed description of your problem, as well as your system specifications and a HijackThis! log.

After you do the reinstall, I would install Microsoft Security Essentials. Also, be sure that you get all of the latest updates for your OS and other software. Post back if you have any problems with reinstalling using your Dell OEM disks. In the future, if you think you might have become infected w/ malware, please post back here before things get so bad... Also, scan your system once in a while in Safe Mode using Malwarebytes Antimalware.

Yeah - sorry about that - I thought I'd replied to your post already...

That log is a mess. I would opt for a complete reinstall. Newer Dells have a recovery partition, while older Dells can be restored using the OEM CDs.

You may want to back up your irreplaceable files before the reinstall. Do you have a flash drive or CD/DVD-Rs?

First try system restore from the recovery partition - As soon as you turn the computer on, begin to press ctrl+F11 rpeatedly until you get an option menu, then choose "Restore"

If you don't have a recovery partition, reinstall with the CD - just boot the computer from your Dell CD and follow the on screen instructions. When you get the option, opt for a Full Installation and do a complete format (as opposed to a quick format) on the C: drive where your infected OS currently resides.

Post back with an update.
