im new to using the wireless with my laptop , cant understand it lol

I took my laptop to a friends house the other day and I thought I was just going to act goofy and try and get on the internet, I didnt even have my battery pack in and poof , im surfing the internet when I clicked on the internet explorer button , I knew that my laptop had a wireless card in it , however I thought you had to pay for it to get it ,

I guess it was coneecting through someone elses computer, anyways , i was downloading songs at 25 bytes a second at her house for free , when here at home ,we pay for dial up and download songs at 4 bytes a sec.


is there a way or somethign I can get that amplifies my range of the wirelss conection ?


i have a satellite m45 tosshiba


also is it safe to check your email ect , since its connecting to somewhere I dont know lol
 
Your cousin or the neighboring houses probably don't secure their routers so anyone with wifi had access to it. If they secure their router's, then you can't access it.

As far as wireless range, there really isn't anything you can do. The area it covers is limited and there are some unusual ways, but I don't know the validity of they working or not.

I mean , can the person im connecting to see my password or my information from my computer.

They shouldn't be able to see it and you should be pretty safe if it is on yours. I am not saying it's not possible, but just that it was just that one time, they probably wont or even notice you were using it.

As far as illegality go, yes it's illegal unless if it was your cousin, they consented and say that "sure, you can use it." Other than that, if you just go hopping around and getting on any unsecure wireless signals, it's illegal.
