i just bought 3 Imacs with OS 9.2 on them.
specs are : CPU power pc g3 @ 333MHz,
RAM 32mb
HDD 6 GB

they all work, but they are loaded with a bunch of junk, and i want to use one of them as a file/music share/server. i dont know much of anything about macs, so i dont know how new of a mac OS i can put on them. im thinking i will put the original 9.2 on them unless someone has a better idea. but. as of now i need to find the 9.2 if anyone knows where i can get them??

i'm also thinking of trying out linux on one of them, for the first time.

thanks for any and all input.

Ya I had the same issue for the old imac I was given. Didn't have any software and the people who had it tried to delete random files in an attempt to protect data but they deleted some system files and whatnot.

Just a couple weeks ago a guy on Craigslist that was giving away two apple laptops had already given them away when I asked him, but he still had the original OS8 and OS9 disks so I lucked out.

Try craigslist or Ebay. Some websites still have them, but they don't come cheap.

Good luck to ya buddy.

About linux, I thought only certain versions worked on the PPC architecture? I was under the understanding that not all versions of linux worked on the macs.

Exactly what I was going to say. Anything pre OS X 10.4 era most likely has a PPC CPU. I don't know of any Linux distro's that run on PPC architecture (although there probably are some).

:)

You can order the original restore disks for a nominal fee (like $15 bucks) from apple directly, or try to find them on ebay. Yellow Dog Linux is a great distro that runs on PPC hardware and those macs are PPC. You would have to dig up an older version of Yellow Dog Linux from like 2002ish or around there for it to be efficient.

If you do upgrade them (which you are most likely better off selling them and buying a mac mini) you must install a firmware update and more RAM before upgrading beyond 10.1. 10.2 requires a firmware update that if you do not install it, it can render the machine useless. Trust me I know this from experience.

Do you have the original disks?
