iMac Rumours

i'm really disappointed... well seeing as there's no new iMac, i might just do that. i was really hoping for a quad core version to help me with video rendering.

so with that out of the way, should i get the current core2extreme 2.8ghz w/ 8800gs 512mb iMac or a MBP with a c2d running @ 2.53, 4gb ram, 9400/9600gt? is the core2extreme waaaay better than the c2d in the mbp? will it help with editing and rendering as good as a quad?

EDIT: i might just wait til march, they may release one without a major event like what they did with the refreshed iPod Touch and iPod Nano.

The movie transformers was edited on like 2 or 3 macbook pros. I think it can handle it. Editing and rendering are two different creatures I will give you that. However, if you want real rendering power why not just go for the Mac Pro? I mean those things sport quad core Xeon processors, which would whomp the floor with any Core processor when it comes to rendering.

Most worthless mac ever? I think so. Introducing the macbook wheel.

It took a guy 45 minutes to type a email, it's battery only lasts 20 minutes and it's $2600. It seems like it is a joke, is this for real? If so it was well done.

Qoute "anything on the computer is just a few hundred clicks away:

EDIT: Ok, it is a joke, Online zine the onion put that together. It was very well done.

lol. I'll buy anything if it's shiny and made by Apple!!!!
:)

ROFLMAO!

"The aggrevated rooster scratched the dirt"

:P

One of the lines suggested by the sentence completer thing on the MacBook Wheel

Don't get a MacBook, they don't last long from what I've seen. We have Dell's, Compaq's, HP's, etc. that work fine even after 5+ years. The MacBook's we have seem to really bite the dust after 3 years, not to mention repairs on Apple laptops are significantly more.

We do have 25 iMac's in one of the labs though and they are great so far!

they're expensive.

i know the MBP will do fine with editing(running the software) the performance of it while rendering it is where i'm doubtful. is a core2extreme @ 2.8ghz in the iMac waayy better over a normal c2d? and the one of the reasons why i want the iMac is of the big sexy screen.

I have worked with thousands and thousands of PC and Mac clients over the year. They all fail. None of them are free or escape that. I have a G4 iBook that is like 7 years old, and it has the white case and while it is on its last leg - I USED THE CRAP OUT OF IT. I also take real good care of my electronics. I also had a HP business class laptop that ran like a champ for several years as well.

A lot of it depends on how the user takes care of the machine. Laptops are not toys and if you toss them around like a toy they will break.

MBP and Mac Pro, the cost differences is not all that much depending on what you get. Also, that machine will last you several years.

Who knows, maybe our school just got a bad batch, but now that they are 3 years old I've had at least 2-3 laptops a week come in from teachers complaining about the battery now shows 0% or has an "X", that the power adapters fry (usually their fault though), and that the computer shuts down randomly. I'm not alone either, if you Google "MacBook Shutdown" you will see thousands of incidents.

Yeah I know, just like if I google my vista issues I will get millions of hits on Google, yet other people claim to have never seen that problem.

I don't doubt what you are saying but to make your assumption that they are bad based of your environment would not reflect someone else's experience.

All laptop batteries go bad if they are left uncharged and the back up cell dies, most people still think you need to drain Li-Ion batteries, but that is false. If the back up cell drains your battery is dead, so it is never a good idea to fully drain those batteries. It is an old wise tale and people still tell other people. Laptop carts are horrid horrid inventions and if you leave your batteries uncharged for even a month and they are low, then they have the risk of dying.

I stored a bunch of laptops (both PCs and Macs) one summer in some carts and I had no idea how many were charged. I had to send out several hundred batteries for swap out.

Also, it depends on how you use them. In my experience adults generally take better care of their stuff over kids. Not always the case but as a generalization I think that is true.
