In a bind, need suggestions

I currently have the computer in my signiture but would like something different, something a little higher end. I know its out dated. Would it just be cheaper to build a new system or just upgrade the current one? Is my current one so far out of date that there arent alot of upgrades available?

Another question is i know way back when i built this that the intel core 2 duo's were the better processor but is intel still better or are the amd's a better bang for the buck?
 
Depends how much you have to spend. IMO you can get away with a new CPU/MB/GPU/RAM and then gradually upgrade parts from there. If you want to keep it cheaper then AMD is the way to go. RAM is really cheap too, so 8GB won't be too expensive. A quick pick of parts, compatible with Bulldozer:

I was looking at the setup you posted, but what is the FSB on the amd processor just so i can compare it to intel cpus?
 
Whats the difference? Is hyper transport better and faster? Would that cpu linkin suggested be better then the I5 or I7 s ?
 
Hypertransport is just a different device. It isnt any better or worse than the FSB setup.

The 955 is slower clock for clock than the i5s and i7s.
 
i don't think the 955 beats any core 2's clock for clock either, just the way higher clock for the price along with 2 extra cores for a similar price and the bulldozer cpu coming out make amd the better chooice for a lower cost upgrade.
 
Look at the 955 and 2500k this way: For $100 less than the 2500k, you get ~75% of its performance in gaming and general stuff.
 
So basically intel would still be the way to go but amd would be a cheaper way to. I guess a question i have is going from my E6400 to the AMD 955 would i notice a big difference in gaming or everyday use? or should I just just go with another intel cpu? I have always used intel so I would like to continue but there prices are more then amd. If amd will get the job done maybe i will go that route.

It's a pretty big step up from an E6400. High end AMD boards are generally cheaper than intel ones too :)

Unless you really do a ton of CPU-heavy tasks the AMD should do fine.
