In Game Audio Dropping out/Distorting..

In my games, sometimes my audio cuts out for a few seconds at a time, and at one point when it was raining in the game the sound was fine, but then it started crackling, but when I closed the game down, and tested other sound applications, I didn't hear the crackle..

Any ideas on where to go to get to the bottom of any sound problems? :confused:
