You are linking an AMD card, here's the story:
>Normal price
>Price drops due to new launches
>BitCoins rise to $1000/each
>AMD cards farm bitcoins very well
>All AMD cards gets sold out
>AMD cards rise in price again.

Note the price of this (now discontinued, but nonetheless) expensive card. I purchased mine for $370 some time ago.

I know I got it on sale, but the sale wasn't that gracious. Has there been some sort of rise in the price of these things?

Expensive? Its a 7970. Which, If Im not mistaken was top of the line for AMD when it was launched. Pretty much every standard top of the line graphics card is $500. Its been that way for decades. Then you have your overclocked fancy third party cards that cost whatever they feel like charging.

But no, there hasnt been any rise in graphic card prices in general.

Id say if you got a flagship card for $370 you got a steal.

When R7/R9 launched, AMD cards fell in price. You could get 7970s for dirt cheap (price dropped and they were often on sale). The following numbers are off the top of my head (and I don't use $, but DKK :D), but R9 290X got released at $450 and later rose to $550 due to BitCoins.

Same principle as F@H, but you can earn money. You use hardware to farm/mine BitCoins. AMD uses OpenCL, which is great for farming (calculating, really).
My friend has a GTX 590 and it mines with roughly 300-350mhash/s, while my HD 6950 2GB does the same. Got the same results from a CFX-disabled 2x HD 5770 independent farming (~175mhash/s each)
BitCoins recently spiked in price like mad. They used to be worth nothing. I read an article about the first or one of the first purchases with BTC. It was 10.000 BTCs for a cup of coffee. They recently peaked at like $1200/BTC, meaning that coffee today would be $12.000.000.
I had spent probably $30 on power to earn $20 worth of BTCs, then they spiked and became like $300 worth. Then I accidentally sent it all to a non-existing wallet, which means I lost it all with no way of getting it back.
BitCoins are an amazing feat in terms of encryption. If that interest you, read up on them.
A Swede recently got in the news because he accidentally threw away $4-7M worth of BTCs he had lying on an old HDD :)

Well at this point AMD doesn't care if they sell 7000 series or not, just selling off inventory. Places like Newegg and so on will price them at what ever that want to. They could care less if they sit on the shelves for 6 months if they can get 500 bucks out of them. The less amount of them, the more they are worth. When AMD runs out of inventory on dies and stock on shelves are gone, then they are worthless. Will be able to buy them on Ebay for 150 bucks.
