increasing usb power?

hey guys. i just bought a seagate expansion 1tb portable drive. i was giving a single port usb to run this thing. problem is it needs more than 500amps. using a 2 pronged usb cable (y cable) got it running.

question is..... how do i turn up the juice for the usb port to get it to run with only 1 prong usb? i'm guessing bios but i don't see it. thx

you mean .5A, and short answer is yes, long answer is it is a bad idea. you could use a powered USB hub that would probably be a better idea, but still dont recommend exceeding the .5A limit...

You can't.

A USB 3.0 port could do it though, if you had a USB 3.0 cable for the drive as well.

Agree with linkin, USB 2 has a maximum draw current of 500mA and there is no where on the motherboard or in the BIOS to turn it up. You will have to settle on using 2 ports or buy a powered hub.
As your MB is at least 2 years old you obviously don't have fitted USB 3 which can support up to 900mA.

cool thanks. i'm puzzled why seagate would give us a single usb for the drive considering that the drive uses more than 5mA. many years ago i bought a 100gig drive from seagate and it came with a y cable. many complaints from amazon!
