Infected from added drive?

This may seem like a noob question, but If I have another hard drive hooked to my PC to be scanned for viruses, formatted, etc. could the viruses infect the rest of my PC as well? Should I always have the drive to be scanned hooked up as slave?

I doubt it. Most viruses aren't "smart" enough to do it, or they haven't been programmed for it.
