Infected with spyware!

When I clicked on internet explorer today a message popped up saying my computer was infected with spyware. Now all this stuff has been installed on my computer. Also I can't access some websites.

What exactly is spyware, and how do I get rid of it? Thanks.

Spyware is sotware that installs with or without your permission, and reports your browsing and emailing habits to a third party and tries to get you to use certain services or products. It is a security problem and slows down your computer.
Install and run Adaware and Spybot
they will remove the spyware that you have on your PC. Keep them up-to-date and run them once every week or so, just like you would a virus scan.

Thanks for the info. I installed and ran Adaware and Spybot, but my computer is still really slow at times, and I can't access certain websites...

It's already been mentioned but did you make sure to update Adaware and Spybot before you scanned your system? They are two excellent programs (if not the best) but won't do much good without the latest definitions installed.

take care

Which websites are you unable to visit? What browser are you using?

first of all dont beleive shit found on the internet the warning was itself a path for spyware, second get Microsoft Anti-spyware and update and run it.prog has options to remove the IE toolbars and edit IE settings.

I've updated Adaware and Spybot prior to running them, and I've done multiple scans. My computer is still acting up. I'll install Microsoft anti-spyware and see what happens. I'd really like to get this fixed, because re-formatting my computer seems to be the only other choice (and I don't really want to do that). Would seeing my log file be helpful? Thanks a lot.

Hi Tech Girl,

I Have Exactly The Same Thing.
I Have Just Posted A New Thread Before I Read Yours.

I Have Done What You Have, Run Numerous Spywares With No Joy.

I Have A Tech Coming Around Today Or Tomorrow To Remove It.

App It Is Embedded Into The Boot Menu And If You Dont Know What Youre Looking For You Will Take Out The Wrong Thing And 'blue Screen' You Puta.

Here Is My Email Address, If You Contact Me Through That I Will Let You Know What He Did To Remove It.

Bt The Way It Was Downloaded By Msn.
I Have Been Advised To Remove Everything To Do With Msn As There Have Been Loads Of Complaints About This Sort Of Thing As Well As Virus Coming Down With Program Updates Etc.

I Will Let You Know As Soon As I Know. Be Patient.

Tech Girl, :D
Hi, I've got rid of mine.
I downloaded SPY SUBTRACT 2.64 from the following:

http://www.intermute.com/products/spysubtract.html

That program found shit that ALL the others couldnt, it even found a virus [which was quickly destroyed by AVG 7.0- also excellent]

Try it.
Download it, it is a free 30 day trial and belive me well worth it not to have that annoying crap keep jumping in your face.

:)
Let me know how you get on.
Cheers

SpySubract is made by the company that owns CWShredder and is a valid product. Spysweeper has one of the best detection rates, MSAntiSpyware has a very good removal rate, Ad-aware & Spybot are very good programs as well but Ad-Aware needs to be configured correctly before you run it (install the VX2 plugin from their website and run a Full Scan NOT a Smart Scan). You would also do better to boot to safemode when trying to scan and clean spyware (reboot, press F8 key before windows loads, choose safe mode), then reboot to safemode and scan a second time, then reboot normal.
Good luck, :)
