Insanely long boot-up

Until about yesterday, my computer booted in about 30 seconds. Here is the chain of events:
  1. Compaq screen
  2. BIOS screen
  3. Blinking white cursor on black screen
  4. Windows Loading screen
  5. Logon
All of the sudden, there is this long time of nothingness(blank screen) in between steps 3 and 4. It is generally about 1 minute long, and the Windows loading takes about 45 seconds, which is much longer than it previously did.

What can I do to make this computer behave?

btw, logon only takes 6.5 seconds, so I don't have a lot of programs to load

performed a scandisk to check the state of your drive?... my guess is bad sectors or something like that

I just got this hard drive a month ago (250GB, 16MB, 7200RPM), it better not have bad sectors. I'll run that and post back.

edit: OK, where is scandisk?

btw, the hdd does not need to be defragged

Is that the SE16 WD2500KS would it? I have 4 of them and have gotten "reports" of bad sectors from my machine with 2 of the 4 drives. Could also be a lot of different reasons. My best guess would also be something with the HDD or possibly the windows install.

just go to your c:
right click and check for errors in the tools panel.
you will probably have to restart.

other things you can try is run a defrag on your registry. find a good free one and see if it helps.

Nope, its a Maxtor 6L250R0

OK, I performed a scandisk check, but I don't know if it gave any errors, because I let it run overnight and in the morning it was just sitting at the logon screen. How do I know?

i think it generates a text file to log if there were any changes but i cant be sure. i know for sure that you'll get a load of files that say found001 etc if there were any serious errors

Download Microsoft Bootvis and run a scan from Trace>NextBoot + Driver Delays. Then zip it and attach it here and let me look at it.
