Insight?

So as i wait on funds for my lego pc ive been second guessing my choice of video card. The gtx 580 seems like Very bad value. So i was wondering what your opinions are. Should for the 6xx and just use the integrated sandy bridge graphics till then? Should i buy 4xx card(s)? What do you think.

Well, the gtx 580 is one of the highest benching cards available at the moment (even over some dual gpu cards) For the $500 I definitely think it's worth it. That is, if you've got the money. Or for less than $300 am HD 6950 is a great option. As it always has to mentioned, on several cards there is an extremely high success rate of unlocking the BIOS to a 6970 which gives around a 15% performance boost. And just for the record, I actually have a system with a gtx 580 running right next to a system with an HD 6950.....the nvidia blows away radeon.

I'm a huge fanboy for the Radeon HD 6950. It's cheaper, brilliant performance... What's not to love?

What about the 6xx series and the 7xxx series? Should i just wait? I mean i am getting a sandy bridge so i think i could hold of on a video card for a bit and play games that are easy on graphics?

If I'm not mistaken, the Radeon 6XXX series hasn't been out very long, especially the 6950 which came out in december, I believe. Don't chase for the latest and greatest, cause you'll never have it. What's out today is more than enough to handle any software/game out and anything coming out in the next couple of years.

OK lets assume my budget is 1 gtx 580. Here are my options.

1 gtx580
2 gtx560 ti
1 radeon 6970 and go crazy with extra cash
2 radeon 6950
1 gtx 480 and go crazy with the extra cash

What would you do and why?

I'm probably the only one who does this but I check the bench mark scores on this site and see how much of a difference in performance I'll get and see if it's worth the extra money.
What's cool about it is, the actual cards (the brand and model) are linked to the right (most anyway). So based off that site, I would definitely hit up the gtx 480 and save some money

this one in particular

Yea im feeling the 480 also. It seems like its the same as the 580 just a bit slower. If i did get the 480 how long do you think i could keep it until i need to upgrade?

Also i just realized if i buy the egva version i can use the step up program to move to a higher series if the 480 is no longer being produced :)

For like ever. haha No, but for real quite a while. It's faster than the gtx 460 and the 460 is a really popular card right now. By the time you need to upgrade you could always buy another 480 (which will be cheaper at that point) and sli for a nice performance boost.
