Hi, could someone please explain what this means and how I would carry out these step? Would be much appreciated..

5. Make a safe copy of software.exe in the install directory

6. Copy software.exe from the Patch directory to the directory where you installed software and run it!

You're being pretty vague, but lets assume software.exe is actually bf2142.exe.

What it's saying is make a copy of the game executable (bf2142.exe), and save the copy to another folder in case something goes wrong.

Then from the patch you have, copy the software.exe to the same folder where you installed the game (ie C:/Program Files/EA Games/BF2142).
