Install Gmail notifier on Linux

Hello all,
I'd download the gmail notifier from this location:
http://gmail-notify.sourceforge.net/download.php

I extract it, but I don't know what does that mean:
then go into the created directory with the files and start the notifier with ./notifier.py
Can some body explain more?

what linux are you using mate ?
distro's like Ubuntu are DEBBIAN, so its .deb, so just right-click it and install, Distro's such as Suse,Pclinux are Redhat, so they are RPM.
why download the tar package when you can use packages like deb ?

yes (k)ubuntu is a debian system, so get the deb package
