Install SATA drives

I have two 320GB western digital wd3200jd SATA drives that I am trying to install into a ideq 200p with VIA VT6420.

I slipstreamed the drivers into the install and XP installed on the first drive. Then, I went to plug in the other drive and XP froze. I restarted over and over but xp will not boot.

When I unplug the 2nd drive everything is fine again. Does anyone have an idea why the 2nd drive is not detected and my system won't boot?

Thanks

I know when I installed both my drives I left my secondary unpluged and installed the OS on my main drive. When all that was done I simply restarted my pc and made sure everything was working . After that I shut it down and plugged up my second drive and windows went and found it and installed.

Do you have the jumpers on the drives , if so what are they set too ? Also does the bios see both drives?

I had no jumpers, then I tried jumping 5 & 6.

Yes, also with xp running. It would freeze. Once after sitting for 10 min xp said it installed new device, but froze again.

Here is what I get when I restart.

VIA screen that says "press <TAB> key into user window!"

I press TAB and get nothing.

Then it says (whether I push TAB or not), "The BIOS does not be installed Press <g> to continue".

If I hit <g> I get a disk boot failure message.

Are you sure you have to the drive with the OS set as your boot drive, it sounds like your just booting to the blank drive. You have Sata 1.5 ports and the drives are 3.0. On a W/D Sata 3.0 drive you need to put a jumper on the second set on pins from the left so it will run in Sata 1.5 mode.

Everyone thank you so much for the speedy responses.

I finally figured it out. I previously had gone through several sets of cables (all brand new), so I had pretty much ruled that out. Well, I took my machine up to work and went through 3 more sets (brand new) just to be sure - and finally it works. The final cables are "LinkTek" 26 AWG.

I cannot believe it. I almost threw the whole thing out the window the night before. I actually punched it. I have been trying to figure this out for 4 days. I cannot believe how much reading I have done over this. Stupid cables.
