Install SATA

I installed my 500 GB SATA HD by plugging in the power and data cables. Then I went to system setup to turn on SATA port 1. SATA port 0 is my primary HD. I still do not see my HD in "My Computer". Windows Vista has already automatically installed the driver and I've tried restarting.

With a brand new drive you need to partition and format it in order for Windows to see it as a logical drive and assign a drive letter to it. A bare drive won't seen until then. With Vista you can go into the "Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Storage" section if you can remember all this and open the storage up to see the Disk Management tool there. That will show optical as well as your hard drives.

Look for the one without any drive letter that shows the 465gb or so unallocated drive space and right click there to choose the create new partition. After that has been done you can use the right click menu to choose the format option and later even repeat that to change the drive letter Windows assigns to it.

Here Iprefer teh free Linux drive tool called GParted live for cd to use on both XP and Vista drives. You can also choose the format option found when booting with the Vista installation disk. Below the "Install Now" button seen in the top half of the screen you will see the new repair tools button to open another section. You can use that to reformat an existing one as well.
