installation disc compatible?

i've got a question...I'm having problems with my Compaq laptop and dont have a recovery partition or discs to reinstall xp with...not Compaq specified anyways....i have "reinstallation cd Microsoft XP home edition including service pack 1" cd that came with my old dell computer...i have a product key off the laptop, would this disc work to run a clean install???? even tho its says "dell" on it????
 
The CD would work, yes, but the CD key wouldn't work as it is from the other dell computer. As long as you don't have XP on the other Dell, then you can just call Microsoft and they should give you a new CD key.
 
thanks for the feedback, the dell computer is running XP currently, would the key off that computer work with the disc from the same computer? or how about "genuine" key???

You could use the key off the older Dell. Thats what I do. Just don't do it too much or a flag will raise up @ Microsoft. If activation fails just *cough* lie and say your HDD died *cough*

You have to get something out of Microsoft, dont you?
 
ok this is what my cousins younger cousin, cousins friends brother did:

1. he had a old compaq and switched out the mobo.
2. the recovery disks didnt work after that because of the tatoo procedure.
3. he downloaded an xp home ed. .iso of BT.
4. used the old compaq key but the key was blacklisted.
5. this guys was indian.
6. he called microsoft and spoke in hindi to the lady on the phone.
7. she gave up a new key.

the end.

It's best not to talk about BT as mods will be on here any minute! Anyways, thats a good story!!
