... back into its original case but wont boot from it. it appears it doesnt see it. error #'s 5-(floppy), and 8-something like "fake floppy not found", then says press any key to continue but wont recognize keystroke, but, i can navigate in the bios using the keyboard. i want to eventually restore the oem software with the recovery disk, and i tried that too but it again wont acknowledge keystokes.
I had put the hdd in my new build unill the new hdd was set up with new os, but didnt change anything on it.

what to do?

thanks

You may have a bios issue. Go into the bios and see if it detects the hard drive. Try setting the bios back to defaults.

ok, thanks for the reply johnb. i think ive done that, but ill need to investigate it to make sure. may wind up needing to re-install xp if i can find a disc (have 1 pc at a time key). im trying to get my old pc back working so i can give it to someone who's never owned one. it came with xp before sp1 and the manuf. techy says he wouldnt try to install anything above sp1, then update from there. if i can find a disc it would simplify things. but ill exhaust you're avenue first.

thanks

I would not recommend installing pre sp1 and then upgrading to the recent version as some computers have problems after upgrading. I would recommend slipstreaming SP2 or 3 into a new install cd. Use a program called autostreamer to do it. You would also need a burning program to burn a new cd. Nero, roxio, IMGburn would work.

the pc is dated back to 1999 (the bios) and was bought new in 2001. i think a new install cd costs more than the pc's worth. it came with xp before sp1, and was updated to sp3 along the way. i have burning.

added 9/6 > just going to do fresh install. thank you
