Installed new HD, now. . . .

OK, I just upgrade from an 80 gig HD to a WD 500 gig HD. I used WD's Lifeguard and it seemed to move all files and programs over from the old HD to the new just fine. However, when I remove the old HD the computer will not boot up. Windows XP is on the new HD, but is not being read. I can't re-install XP from disk because it came already installed on the computer. I do have some recovery disks I had made, if they might help. I've just spent an hour in the labyrinthine world of Microsoft.com, and the best I can figure is that they are going to charge me $59 to talk to a human being about this.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What computer brand is it.

You should have access to an OEM version of your Operating System - even if you have to contact your PC manufacturer to get it.

Get into your BIOS and make sure your new drive is selected for booting.

Yes it sure does. I transferred 80GB of data, including OS, to a new 160GB drive using DataLifeguard (one WD drive to another WD drive) with zero problems.

I can only think of 2 things...

1. Being its not setup to boot from your new HD

2. There isn't real copy of an OS installed on your computer it was just a copy like a disc image!

If I was you, I would of installed a fresh copy of your OS and then transfer over all the necessary files and programs...

You cannot copy windows from one hard drive to another hard drive. Windows must be install from a windows oem cd

Maybe his old hard drive wan't a WD and both hard drives must be WD for the OS and stuff to transfer over.
