Installed new mobo + cpu... orig windows7 os wont load

Hi, I have removed a gigabyte am2 motherboard, athlon x2 6000 and 4gb ddr2 and replaced them with am3 gigabyte board, am3 phenom x4 and 4gb ddr3.

The problem is when I connected my hard drive, which I have not touched/ altered since it was connected to last motherboard, it boots but as windows 7 is starting it just crashes out, then when restarted it gives an option to repair but then sais it is unable to repair.

Is it not possible to use my old installed operating system with new motherboard, I have alot of stuff on hdd and dont want to have to format reinstall windows.

Nope. If you have the old parts still, put them back in and find a way to get your important data off the HDD. Exchanging that many parts, windows isn't going to load cause of compatibility issues with the new hardware and the drivers. It'll need a fresh install of windows to work properly.
 
Thanks for your reply, unfortunately I sold the old parts on ebay D'oh! :(

Does anybody know of a way to get data off a hard drive without having to build a system to house it? ie, connecting to new os as secondary maybe?

Yeah, you can either hook that drive up to another pc as a second drive or if you have an extra drive, put the OS on that and use your first OS as a secondary. The first obviously being the easier
 
Ok thanks Troncoso, so if I hook it up to my win7 fresh install as a secondary sata drive, will I be able to view the files on it via windows even though it still has a win7 os installed? will it appear just as a external hdd would?

yeah, when you click on it, it'll open just like clicking on the local drive opens that holds the OS. You'll see the different folders, ei: Program Files, WINDOWS, Users, etc.

To get to your files go into the Users folder and click on your username.
 
Ok thanks, do you know if it would work with xp, my friend has a dell pc with xp installed and I would (if possible) hook it up to his pc to get data off then format if.

as long as his xp is new enough to have sata port unless yours is old enough to use ide ribbons, but if you still have the os disk or restore disk or something you may be able to use tham, your problem is that windows liscenses itself to the motherboard the drive is attatched to, so changing the mobo means losing the liscence, call the maker and see if they have any advice for transfering a liscence, they should have some recomendation, other than your screwed.

That's only true if you used an OEM license. If you have a retail disk, you can disregard jonnyp11's comment.
 
Thanks for you replies, yes it does have sata ports so ill connect it to my mates pc and hopefully just copy the data before fresh win7 install.

Should really do a clean install. But look in the bios and make sure the SATA ports are in IDE mode. If they are not set them to IDE. Then see if it wil boot. If not try safe mode. If it boots, go into Add and Remove and uninstall all the old drivers. Reboot, then install the new drivers.
