Installed updates. Sound not working now. Win 8.1.

Wasn't sure if this is the right forum for this so my apologies if this is in the wrong spot. Anyways, installed some updates and now my sound isn't working. There were 8-9 updates. Most of them were Windows updates. There was an audio update though...I believe it was for RealTek. I viewed my recently installed updates to try to uninstall but only the Windows one showed up. I uninstalled it but still no dice. When I hover over the volume icon in the taskbar, all I see is a red circle with an X in the middle of it. Anyone know what might be going on?

Have you right clicked on the volume icon and select Playback Devices? It should bring up a menu that lists all the possible devices that can playback audio. Perhaps post a screenshot of that menu and we can take a look if you can simply just re-enable it and set it as your default device.

Under the "Programs and Features" menu in Control Panel, I went to "View installed updates" and then uninstalled the windows update I installed today. I was unable to find the Realtek audio update (at least I think it was Realtek, it was definitely an audio/soundcard update).

Go into device manager, right click on realtek audio device and click on properties. Click on driver tab, click on roll back driver.

That worked! For whatever reason, the driver that was installed for my Realtek device was installed back in 2015. I rolled that one back and the audio started working again. Then I updated the driver in the device manager and it still works.

Always recommend updating drivers from the manufacturer and never from windows updates as they are usually outdated anyway.
