installing 95 games on XP

originally, i could install windows 95 games on my windows xp home sp2 system. however, i have not been able to run the CD install of an XP game for a few months now. After attempting to install Unreal and Halflife, this can be rather frustrating. I've already tried the XP compatability tool, and that didn't help. As soon as i double click the setup file, it just makes the hour glass for a few seconds then disappears. Here's my system specs if they are of any help:

Athlon XP 2900+, 512 DDR PC 3200 RAM, GeForce 6600, 500w power supply

I would greatly appreciate any help, because i love the good old win 95 stuff.

Isn't there some emulation tool for XP that lets you install and run 95 games? Im sure I read something like that some time ago...

i may try that emulator some time, just don't wanna buck up for it ;). i may have to dig a computer out of my graveyard in the basement and upgrade its graphics chip. I could probably make the games run on my xp system if they would just install though. Well i'll keep trying stuff and i'll let you know if i find a way to fix it.

Yes, please do, because I have chosen not to install SP2 on my computer because of the fact that the security "updates" block a lot of older games from working properly.

Bingo! Not to mention older versions of Nero, like I have, or some versions of Yahoo Messenger... the list goes on and on.

Out of all the dusty and moldy old 95 programs I've tried to install, only two don't work 100% properly: Magix Notation and Tropico. In Notation, the music staffs/staves have to be made really huge or really small in order to appear. In Tropico, in any of the pre-programmed island scenarios, none of the people on the island walk around! They just stand there.

:P Down with SP2! LOL

There's one little dos emulator that goes right past SP2 by creating a virtual dos environment with the mounting of a virtual drive C. http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=52551 While looking for the means to run old dos/3.1/95 based games the search found this one.

How about an 8bit dos games like the originals Duke Nukem- Nukem2- Wolf3D. Those used the board speaker however. I haven't played around with it for any extended time to get regular sound going though.

Yeah, the problem is with the .dll files being accessed properly by the program. I tried messing with some virtual server stuff and everything to get it to work. But then I realised I don't even use the SP2 options, so let's see... Multiple problems with no fixes/improvements? I think I'll take my older "crapier" version thank you very much! :)
