Installing a 4870 into an already working system

bigfella? what's your problem? in every thread i read with you. you seem to get into an argument...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315346

if you install .msi installers under safe mode, it wont work.

dont know what format the drivers are though, maybe they are just .exe

jdbennet states here quite clearly and with proof that windows installer doesn't run properly in safe mode and thus installing drivers is not recommended because they can contain .msi packages. This might not be a problem but it could.

your answer was:
thats just wrong. this issue is not relevent to the topic.
without any explanation, without any subtlety you say it's "just wrong". if you do something like this at least explain what you mean.

I've seen you do things like this in the past couple of days at least 2 times which kinda gets annoying. I really couldn't care less if your way is better or is correct you could at least show some respect.

Man guys this card is insane..!!!!!!!

I wasnt expecting much in Crysis, but man... I was like "oh ill give it a go" and cranked all the settings up to very high or whatever.... With fraps, I can play it with action (gunfire, bad guys etc) and the fps never lower than 26.. Now that may sound low for some of you guys with hard out machines, but thats fricken awesome considering I clocked the demo with my old card (8600gt) all on medium settings at the frame rates often were lower (around 15 - 16 sometimes)

Anyway im impressed haha. Mean. One thing thought that you guys may be able to help me with, when I try to try out GTA San Andreas (not a high demand game I know lol) when its loading up the games and going through all the credit type things (like rockstar games blah blah blah) after the "nvidia, they way its ment to be played" logo the screen just goes black and nother happens, I end up having to reset the computer (none of the usual ctl alt del thingys work). Does anyone know if GTA doesnt support the card or anything? I might try uninstalling and reinstalling GTA.

But yeah awesome awesome card.

Um first I did the install off the cd that came with the card. Then I downloaded the newest one from ATi?

Haha man im still all amped over how good this card is lol.

I did explain, (the issue is not relevent to the topic), meaning msi packages are not relevent to ATi driver installation. anyhoo, thanks for your concern Viper, i will continue to say what i think.

To STil, you may want to update your DirectX.

just telling him it isn't relevent isn't explaining. telling him that msi packages aren't used in ati driver installation is explaining, like you just did.
you can say whatever you want here, by all means do. But you dont have to snarl at everyone else in the process.

I spend a massive amount of my time on this forum explaining things in detail. I was focussing on the OP, not the other guy (who btw usually makes very good posts). The tone of text can be construed in various ways, this is not something i am concerned about.

safe mode is a crap idea

if you dont have it altready, catalyst suite needs to install .NET and that will fail because the windows installer service isnt running

Its not a crap idea, its widely accepted as a very good idea, so that all necessary files that need be added, changed or deleted can be (ie they are not being used in safe mode). The driver package is seperate (and can be downloaded seperately) and has nothing to do with .NET, or the any liimitations to the windows installer.

yeah but if he has a 4870 he wont want the standalone driver, he will want the full suite, which requires .NET to be installed. The suite (catalyst control centre) is essential for overclocking , temperature monitor, tweaking TV setup etc.

No arguments here, but you install the driver first, in safe mode and then the suite in normal mode. Easy, and it avoids potential driver conflicts, and other issues that result from corrupt driver installs. Anyway, Vista contains .NET 3.0 natively (which is is NET2.0 plus WPF/WCF/WF/CardSpace) so there is no need to install it. There is a service pack that takes it to 3.5, but this is not necessary for any ATi driver installation.

Well I installed Directx update and it still didnt. Im in XP at the moment (I dual boot) downloading 3dmark, while playing civ4 (too pass the time for the download)

Ill try again in Vista when thats done, but Im pretty sure Ive already put it to start in xp mode and admin.

Still doesnt work. Lol oh well.

Anyway, ive set my fan speed to 40. Does that mean that it wont go fast when the cards underload?

Cheers

This is ultimately a driver issue mate. Thats a bit of a problem for ATi drives as games depend on the profiles being added. You should be fine in a few months when the drivers are more mature. It may not help, but if it were me, I would download the driver seperately from ATi, and follow my previous instructions re the safe mode installation. It may help, but probably not in this case.
