installing a cdrw

can anyone tell me how to install a cdrw? i have a gateway computer with a 450 mhz and a p3 i want to add a cdrw that is an hitachi/lg model GCE 8487B.
i have already installed the drive and plugged everything in, but it is not recognized. dont know if i did something wrong or what. i am using windows xp. any help would be appreciated.

Is it installed with another drive(master slave config) or did you remove the old drive you had? If you have two, you probably just forgot to set the jumpers. One must be set to Master, the other slave. Then, be sure all's well in your bios. Sometimes things aren't set to auto or CD-ROM, so it won't pick up the new drive.
