Installing a DVD/CDRW Drive

Hi there I have a quick question on installing a burner drive. Now I know that you have to set the jumper to primary slave (since my current CD-Rom Drive is set to primary slave) then connect the Audio cable and the IDE ribbon cable. But do you really need to ground yourself before you begin the installation process? Also do you need somesort of burner software to burn files?

If you bought the burner brand new it should come with something like nero with it or something of that sort to use for burning. Personally i work on computers all day at work and don't worry about grounding. Just touch the metal on the case first and ensure you don't have static charge in your body lol. Why not just keep the cdrom as well and use both so you can burn from cd to cd or cd to dvd ect...?

Well this is what happend. I was importing my Eminem CD onto iTunes and I have no clue what happend while it was importing the CD I was watching The Simpsons and all I hear is something break it sounded like something really heavy fell from 50 feet high. So I go to the computer and I find out its the CD the drive snapped it, I think the magnents were gripping it to hard and it just gave out, and moreless of the CD is still in the drive which I cannot remove without takeing the whole CD-ROM drive apart. The drive doesnt even close. So there is no point to keep it if I cannot use it. If it still worked then I would keep it. So since I have to change the drive anyways I figure I might as well spring the extra 10-15 dollars and buy a DVD/CDRW drive. So for music burning Im just going to use Windows Media Player and iTunes. But what about if I want to save a word document can I just drag and drop or save it the way you save on a floppy?

usually around a 300 Mhz CPU and 64MB RAM are recommended... depending on the type...

Alright then Im good to go cause my system is a bit out dated. I am running a 37m AMD K6 with Win XP , 10 gb hdd, a 64 mb bfg nvidea detonator video card and a 192 mb ram. Now I was looking at this one sony dvd burner it says recommended 800 mhz processor, do you think i could run it even though i have less then half of the recommended speed?

Off track: what you NEED is a newer computer lol.
On Track: I would say just try to find one that is within your specs. SO the Sony one is out, basically.

Well I guess then I'll just have to find a more appropriate one. As for getting a new computer. I know I need one. But money is a bit tight latly so I can't really afford a new one. So I make do with my current system. Its still new enough to run win xp and moreless all my programs. Plus with my AMD I can run some graphic programs that require a 500-600 Mhz processor.

Trust me I know what tight on cash feels like. Being 10 grand in debt (doesn't include school) really hits hard when you cant work full time. lol

Yeah its hard only having 250.00 (myslef) in the bank and when your parents can't really afford a new system every few years when the technology becomes old.

come on boys, i know being in debt is tough, but we need to get back on track or the mods will close this topic...

Alright back on track. Since I have very minimal system setting (now adays) should I even bother looking into a DVD burner?
