Installing an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.20ghz CPU in a Dell Dimension 4700 (What do I need?)

Hi everyone and merry Christmas/ happy holidays!

I just purchased an intel core 2 duo 2.20ghz processor for my old dell dimension 4700. I know a good deal about computers but not much about hardware and very little about processor installation.

I ordered the the chip only - no heatsink or any other accessories. So the chip came alone in a small package without the normal big intel package. Looks just like this (bottom one). (Picture embedding wont work... Is this an HTML page??)

My Dell Dimension 4700 from 2004 still has the stock CPU (Intel Pentium 4 2.8ghz I believe) with th stock hatsnink (pictured below).

With a passive heatsink on top of the actual processor kind of like this:

I need to know what I need to buy to install and ensure the functionality of my new processor. I would be devastated if I installed it wrong and it exploded on me...

So: 1) Should a Pentium 4 2.8 ghz cpu have the same socket as a Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 ghz cpu? Basically, will I need a new motherboard (I'll find out soon enough when I try to install it I guess...)?

2) Most importantly... Will the stock heatsink for my Pentium 4 adequately cool my new core 2 duo processor or should I buy a new one? I really don't want to burn up this new processor.

3) Is there anything else I'll need to ensure the functionality of my new processor or anything that will improve its performance?

It won't work, period. It's the wrong socket. You'll have to replace the motherboard and everything.

If the computer is from 04...then you definitely need a new motherboard, its best to use a new heatsink with the core 2...especially an aftermarket one as you'll want to overclock it. And since you're getting a new motherboard and your 2004 computer is probably not running on DDR2 memory...you'll need new ram.
