Hi

I recently upgraded my pc's motherboard and installed a new hdd with it and windows xp oem. This is my current spec:
Intel Core 2 Duo E7200
Asrock P45R2000 WiFi Motherboard
Nvidia 8600GTS 512MB DDR3
1GB DDR2 ram
Samsung Sinpoint 500GB HDD Sata
DVD-Ram drive by LG

I have an old hard drive wtith a lot of data on it (around 100GB + XP) which is a Maxtor 6V320FO sata drive. Can you just install the drive as usual without takin other measures? I.e so windows reads it as just extra storage space.

Just so I understand correctly, you reinstalled Windows on the new HD and just want to use the old one to recover the files, and use it for data, correct? The issues that I can see happening if this is the case is permissions/security, because usually if you try to simply browse the HD using Windows Explorer it won't let you go to the Documents and Settings folder.

Yer thats what i want to do.

How can these potential problems be solved?

Personally what I would do now is put the old hard drive back in your previous computer, boot it up, then copy any files you want to be saved into a new folder right on the local drive, that way you won't have to worry about Windows not allowing you to get into it from another computer. I don't know if you have XP Home or Pro, if you have Pro then you can go to the properties of that folder, go to the Security tab, and make sure everyone has full control.

I can't do that, as i built my new rig based on parts from the old pc (including the case, and i changed my mobo(which broke) and stuff), which is why the only way of getting to the data is by putting the old HDD in.

Gotcha, I would try it first and see if it works (it might), if not then there are recovery programs out there that can bypass it.

what recvoery programs do you recommend?

The thing is they all cost money, and the trial versions only allow so much. Honestly though since it's already built, I would just put the old hard drive in as a slave (if its IDE), and see if you can navigate it from within Windows.

Yeah I was just going to suggest that. Have you tried sticking the old HDD in as a slave and trying to pull files off it. That is what I did when I built my system so I could get my music from the old hard drive.

I'm having the same problem adding a IDE drive along side my newer SATA drive, the CMOS knows it's there, but windows explorer doesn't tell me it is.
At least its not just me I suppose.
