Installing an Operating System on an External Drive

All a MAC address is is a physical address for your networking hardware. Each piece of networking hardware has a unique MAC address. They're only used for identification and for some levels of network authentication.

The MAC is not a unique ID for the computer, as a computer can have several NICs, and therefore have several MAC address.

The MAC address is a unique number, but it's on the network interface card, such as the built-in ethernet port, or an add-on wireless card.
