Is it possible to install a new operating system on an external hard rive then when i want to boot using the other operating system i would use the external hard rive to boot up.

Forget installing OSs like Windows on an external usb type or using an external casing through usb. The only external drives that are bootable are usb flash memory type drives. The main concept for external drives and casings is for storage/backup and transfers of data and files between systems. You take the drive not the entire system along with you.

well you can actually put linux on a externel drive. I have done it before.

however it is not easy, you need to change the kernel and what noe, it is easer to get a copy of pendrivelinux and put it on a flash drive, bt yes it is possable to use linux and use it on any computer

Even with Linux usb drivers have to be loaded unless the usb ports are already active in order for that OS to load. With MS you have to see the usb support first in order to have XP or Vista load. Linux can also load from an extended partition while Windows requires a primary type partition to load from.

These are two totally separate platforms to begin with. Besides live for cd distros even Linux drive tools will load from a cd-r or usb flash drive while Windows attaches itself to the entire system and is dependent on the internal hardwares like board, cpu, etc. due to the product activation process and hardware profiling.
