Installing Apps in Ubuntu

For thoes of you who use Ubuntu,

How do you go about installing applications for ubuntu?


I try and use Aptget as much as possible, bit quite often i find the program im trying to install does not work and i quite often get a cannot find error, event hough i know its there.

Do you ever try installing tarballs, and if so how do you go about doing it?

to uninstall you should go to -->synaptic package manager.
to install go to synaptic again (but update your repos) and refresh.
Yes i do install tarballs in ubuntu but by default the package that handles tarballs are not installed.
So you should go to synaptic and install 'build-essentials'. <--this will install the C dev tools in order to compile.
Also if you downloaded a debian package from internet just right click it and use 'G-Debi' installer and it will install it for you

to install tarballs use the terminal.move to the directory of the software you downloaded extract it.once extracted do the following
./configure
make
make install
these 3 are the basic of installing tars.
