i need a tad bit of help. i have to replace my hard drive and i want to install ubuntu on my laptop, but the cd drive is dead. i do have an adaptor that can plug into the ide of the hdd and make it usb so i can read it on my other pc. any help? please!

If your laptop has a working USB port, you can install from there. It's a bit tricky, but do-able.

just in case anyone didnt know, the new hard drive is BLANK! nothing on it at all. the old one is mechanically failed---will not work. so i need to start totally from scratch with no cd drive.

^ I kind of got that from the 1st Post:)

You don't need anything on a HDD in order to use a USB port. Do you have any previous experience with Linux OS's? It would come in very handy for the Linux install.

ive used it in the past a few times. i have the cd right here and used it as a live cd b4. ive got xp on my pc, but have read that ubuntu runs great, all this laptop will b used for is internet and music, nothing else.

I want to boot Ubuntu from a pen drive, but all the instructions I've found require you to burn it to a cd first...and my burner is not cooperating

can you just extract the ISO and then copy it to a pen drive?
