Installing Linux

Is there a way to download and install linux, and have the operating system list
at startup appear in a certain order?

I want the list of OS's to look like this:

Microsoft Windows XP Pro
Microsoft Windows Recorvery Consell
Linux

I dont really need to chage the name of the OS's, but I do need to be able to easily uninstall it, not damage the computer, and have the list in this exact order.

If this requires editing a VERY important system file, then i'll just keep using knoppix.

Also, can you set Linux to install to a directory on my computer, instead of a HD partion? I *really* want to keep all my file and NOT reformat.

if you are using Suse linux it very easy, just click on booty loader configeration in Yast.
if not and you are using the GRUB boot loader, you can edit the boot menu list (menu.lst).

i do not understand what you mean by installing to a directory. if it means a windows XP/NT directory, then the answer is no. this is because linux cannot write to the NTFS flie system. Also there is only one version of linux that i know of that can be installed to a windows directory (winlinux) and can only be done in windows 98/me, they use the FAT file system.

You can get free linux distros that boots and runs right off of the CD...

But geese is correct, you need a separate partition (actually multiple partitions) that is not NTFS or FAT.

Basically, I would think you can use diskpart or Partition magic.. or others.. to reduce your current partition which is either FAT or NTFS, create a new <unknown> partition and let a linux distros use that...
 
just make sure you have a lot of time, because downloading the ISOs has, from my experience, been extremely slow, ANYwhere

I use that for my PC to select which partition to boot everytime I turn the PC on...
