i have downloaded the ubuntu live distro and had a play around. i now want to install it.

1.what is the easiest way to partition my hard drive and have a boot manager?

2.when it is fully installed can i get a higher res the 1024x768?

3. what size partition should i make?

1. The installer includes gparted to partition your drive. You have the choice of letting the installer decide on the partitions for you or manually editing them.

2. There is no limit on screen res as long as your graphics chipset supports it and you have the appropriate driver.

3. Really depends on what you plan on doing, 20Gb would allow plenty of room for the install with enough left over to save things and install extra bits and pieces.

Here's the ubuntu support forum for you: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/

The Ubuntu cd has it's own partision manager that is easy to use in the setup. To get a higher res then 1024x768 you would have to install ATI drivers. You should go to Ubuntu's forums at http://www.ubuntuforums.org/ for help with that. For playing around you can get buy with a 10gb partition. If you installed windows on a fat32 partition you can also read and write to it.

I have to ask... if you let the partition manager do it all by its lonesome, then it misses the windows partition? it wont delete any of my windows stuff? that is the only reason i havent installed Ubuntu yet, i wasnt sure if i should let it decide where to partition.

When I first installed Ubuntu well over a year ago it detected my XP partition.

It will give you a summary of what it's decided to do anyway so if you don't like what it's chosen you just choose the manual option.

The ONLY ways you would lose your windows data is if Ubuntu is installed over the top or you select to have that partition formatted, so just be sure you know where Windows is installed!

right. i have been given a windows vista rtm cd from one of my friends. i want to dual boot that with xp. is it possible to use the partition thing on ubuntu to partition my drive and then instal vista on it?

or is there an easier way

I just use ubuntu's partition manager to partition my hdds. The only thing is, it can't resize window's partitions. You have to have unallocated room already on your hdd.
Create a linux partition using EXT3 and create a 1gb swap partition.

Did you install linux over the vista partion?
Before linux boots up, you should see grub boot loader. It may ask you to hit F8 or F10 to view all the bootable OSs.

if you read my vista topic you will see the problem. i never installed linux as i could make no more partitions so i wouldnt of had a swap partition
