Installing mac os

so... I'm trying to create a solid backup of my mac os disk in case anything goes wrong in the future.

I was wondering if it was possible to install onto a usb device?
I have a .iso of 7.7 gb which when i burn to usb turns to 471 mb (?). The files in the usb are all zipped so i'm wondering if the mac can read them ? is this what normally happens or have i got the settings wrong on ultra iso.

if its not - is it possible to do it from several 700mb disks ? could the computer still install ?

Thanks for your help

I'd just rip an ISO of the disc and store it somewhere. Then if you need it again, just burn it to a dual-layer DVD.

ok yes i could but i was trying to avoid the extra cost well as improving my knowledge a little.
Just read that sticky by the way and following the steps (windows one as im operating from a win machine) and on boot up it says 'missing bootmcr' is this because i've followed the windows instructions or something else ?

your help is much appreciated and i really am learning alot from this.
