Installing new memory

I was thinking of increasing the memory on my desktop. The motherboard has a free 184 pin memory slot and the other two slots are filled with 2x256Mb DDR-400 sticks. My question is can I fill the third slot with a 1Gb stick of DDR-400 for a total of 1.5 Gb or is this not advisable (or possible) due to the different capacities?

You can yes, if it is DDR-400 the same as your others then it should be fine

What about installing a 256mb DDR400 memory stick into a pc along with a 512mb DDR333?

In that case, I think your 256mb DDR400 will only run at the speed of DDR333.

I have another question:

Does the make of the RAM matter? Will any DDR400 ram be ok to use?

yeah, brand doesn't matter. Just make sure your computer (the motherboard) can support that much ram, its usually says up to 3GB or something like that.
