Is it possible (or legal) to install the same copy of Windows XP (same product key and CD) on 2 computers at once? I have an OEM version anyway, so I know I have been able to install it on my old computer, and then later my new computer. I've just never tried having the same version installed on 2 computers at once. Does anyone know if this will work?

Thanks for the help!

Hey

It will work, but it is illegal. You can only use one copy of the Windows XP operating system at once. If you run it on more than one PC, then you are breaking the EULA agreement and essentially the law.

I believe you can purchase an extra liscense through microsoft, im not sure how much it costs though.

But to answer your question, yes you can do it, however you may run into activation issues if its been activated before. And its also against their rules.

Uh-oh breaking the EULA, it so bad. Lol
Im not saying I did it, but do you think people really follow that?

yeah, i kinda thought it may be illegal, but will both computers still be able to access the internet at the same time, or would that be restricted too? Does microsoft even try to keep tabs on that stuff?

I've been told that you can install XP on up to 2 computers but only if it's the full retail version. With the OEM version you are only allowed to install it on one computer and the only way to install the OEM version(legally) on another computer is to buy another license. I think an additional license costs somewhere around $45 or +$100, I can't remember what they told me.

The reason I'm doing this is I got a new pretty good computer for free and i wanted to get it set up to play games between my main computer and it, but I don't really have $90 to buy a new Windows XP right now. I guess I'll just be an honest person and buy a new copy sometime soon. Thanks!

No, one machine and one machine only

Eula

If you read the EULA on a Full retail version it states that you can install it on 1 computer and 1 laptop, but only if both machines are owned by the person that owns the Full version of XP.

As for an OEM it can only be installed on one computer and can not legally be transfered to another computer. So, if you get rid of an old PC you can not install the OEM on anything else.

But then again who cares about the EULA.

In my opinion you should get rid of Windows and install Linux.

This topic has been covered many times. Please use the search engine to look through previous threads....

You cannot legally install the same copy of Windows XP on multiple machines without multiple licenses.
