installing security to a new PC

The more familiar you become with various types of firewall, antivirus, spyware, adware, malware, etc. types of programs the more readily you know which one or what combination will work best. On many occasions if I haven't already posted the MS link on this thread already the cause is not always any of those things mentioned here. Rather it can be problems with offline content that has accumilated on the drive itself resulting in IE errors. The top ten IE errrors are described in length at the MS link here. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/IEtopten.mspx

You are correct on two there. AdAware and Spybot S+D. RegCleaner and AVG 7.1 seem to outdo Registry Mechanic and McAfee?(get rid of). And where did you find CCleaner? I'll just have to list the one used here.

AVG 7.1 Free edition http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
AdAware SE Personal http://www.lavasoft.com
Windows Defender beta2 http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Spybot S+D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
HiJack This http://www.hijack-this.org/
And for a more notorious self generating annoyance "about: blank" here's a few links for removal info.

I ran it to clean up a long list of file types in the temporary folders to free up some of the nearly 160gb of drive space currently being used. It does give you warning messages along with listing the files that were deleted. Plus you have a good options menu for custom settings. I'll add it to the favorites list.
