Installing SSD

Hey Everyone,

Just a quick question about installing my SSD before I go about an do it. It's a Samsung 850 EVO

I plan to only use a 250GB SSD at the moment for the main desktop, but I wanted to go through my thought process on how to install it. I have quite a few questions that are all vaguely answered through online forums.

My plan is to unhook my current HD and plug the same cables into my SSD. Boot the computer and put in the software disc that came with the SSD. Run it (assuming there is software I need on it), reboot, insert and install Windows 8 64bit via DVD.

Is there anything special I'll need to do, or should it really be this straight forward?

I noticed that the SSD didn't come with a SATA to USB cable for their data migration software, do I really need use that software prior to taking my above steps? Or is that primarily to swap old HD contents over to the new SSD? I've read some posts saying that the SSD will function like crap if I don't use this migration software...

I used to be tech savvy, but I haven't had as much time to keep up with all the changes.

I'm basically trying to use the SSD as my primary HD and want to run into as few issues possible prior to starting this to prevent frustration.

Thanks,
Alex

You can either clone your existing drive to your SSD which really isn't advisable or you can unhook old drive, just hook up SSD drive and install windows and use old drive as a data drive and then transfer any needed data to the SSD. Do not install windows with both drives attached as it will put your boot files on the old hard drive. There is no software to install from the SSD disk until after you install windows. Basically the software on the cd is for cloning existing drive to SSD and to setup your SSD drive.

So it really is a simple plug in an go. Will I need to change anything in my BIOS, or just change my boot priority to DVD drive first? By the way you're describing it, it should be really easy.

Awesome. I'll give it a try in a couple hours now that I know it's super straight forward. I'll let you guys know it goes!
