Installing Ubuntu

i started installing ubuntu 7.10 yesterday, and its been almost 24 hours since it started installing. how long does this usually take? other OS's that ive installed only took an hour or so. is this abnormal?
the installing program is also finding a whole lot of errors in the cd. im estimating atleast 30-50000. will it still work even with all of these errors?

You have a bad burn. Ubuntu 7.10 on my system (see sig) took at the most maybe 25 minutes from Booting up the Live CD to restarting after installed. Are you using the Live CD or Alternate CD? If you're not sure, Live CD is the full OS on the disk, and Alt-CD is text-based install. You most likely have Live CD.

The file you downloaded from Ubuntu is fine, you'll just need to re-burn it. I'm guessing you burned this copy at a high speed, yes? Try going for the slowest speed - less chance of data corruption that way. It only takes a few extra minutes and you know things will be good.

After the re-burn, pop it in again, and install. Loading up the Live CD and going through the Installation settings will take a bit, but once the files start to be copied it should fly through.

I'd just junk it, personally. Heading out now, but will return in a few hours. Drop me a Private Message if you have any other questions.

i tried making another cd, but this time i ticked the box for 'Stage to hard drive for better quality' and 'verify copied data disks'. it still did not seem to work. i'm using 'Roxio Creator Basic v9' that came with my version of vista home premium. is there anything i can do to get this to work?

i was looking at a vid of someone installing ubuntu, and i noticed that after it went to the loading screen with the bar going back and forth, it went directly to the desktop. i cant even get mine to do that and live boot. after the bar goes back and forth for 2min, it switches to an all black screen with errors popping up.
169.687843] hcb:error code: 0x70 sense_key:0x03 asc: 0x11 ascq:0x05
169.687899] buffer I/O error on device hdb, logical block 0
these 2 errors pop up the most frequently
on the 20th line it says
busybox v1.1.3 (debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu7) built in shell (ash)
enter 'help' for commands

*initramfs)
i dont know the first letter of last line

is this something wrong with my download or my cd, or is it my computer is refusing to boot it?

i re downloaded and burned it to a new disk and stuck it in. it did the same thing it did before, except its making it a bit further in the bar going back and forth part (i dont know what else to call it). i'm just gonna abandon ubuntu, so i thought i would try a different variation of linux. im thinking about opensuse

yea its direct from the ubuntu site. i think its either my cd drive or the cd writing hardware. when i run it on a different computer, it seems to get further than the other one, and its getting less errors, but they are different, because they say things like 'huh? expected null handler on exit'. even with opensuse it doesnt even get past loading the linux kernel.

Try downloading DeepBurner; it's a free burning program. After installed, select the .iso option, your burning drive, and the lowest speed possible. It's very common to have bad burns on higher speeds.

i finally got the live cd to boot properly, but i had to use a different computer. i think there is a problem with my cd drive, because it couldn't write 2 different linux downloads that i tried downloading and burning twice each. the cd drive couldn't play spiderman 3 when i tried, so i think there is something wrong with it.

to get back to the ubuntu issue, my computer is having a lot of trouble. it was a crappy computer to begin with, but it is having trouble installing it. is the box install window supposed to say anything?

Eh...Spidey3 is a DVD and you're trying to view on CD-rom?

What are the specs on your computer. If its old enough, it may not have the memory to load the Live CD contents.

this is a brand new computer that I bought about 3 months ago running vista home premium. It is a Compaq Presario SR5152NX with 2GB of RAM, 250GB HDD, AMD AthlonTM 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 4000+, DVD/CD burner with lightscribe technology, and a NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE graphics card.

No Dont Do That Without Cd Crashed My Windows And Linux Wouldnt Work It Took Me Alot Of Thinking To Get In Working!
