hi,

i have a dell lat c540 lap and i want to install msdos and win me on a clean 10gb hdd. only having worked in xp and vista i am unsure of how to do the above. things like primary, extended etc are a bit above my 'ead! so help with reformating and partitioning would be of help too.

I have a start up Win me floppy and o/s cd disk.

thanks.

I just checked and Dell has drivers for DOS. I am not sure if I saw win me.
IMO I would run from win me, I would get win 98 instead. As far as the DOS If you really want to learn it go to used book stores.
Phew dodged the bad one...glad you did not ask about config.sys or autoexec.bat.
you still use primary partitions and extended partitions to this day. Have you heard the saying you can put a boat in a ship, but you can't put a ship in a boat...well that is true with primary and extended patitions. You can put an extended partion in a primary, but you can't put a primary in an extended. In DOS and win 98 I think you can make 4 primary and a total of 24 extended....extended are logical, although they show up as drives. I think the two primarys become "C" - "F" , then the logical drives are E- ..... when you start messing with autoexec.bat and config.sys you will really come to appreciate modern PC archetecture...of coarse a notebook is not like a desktop where you have all your slots filled with cards that want an IRQ.
